Blood Transfusions
Acts 15:20: but to write them to abstain from things polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from what is strangled, and from blood. — NEW WORLD TRANSLATION OF THE HOLY SCRIPTURES (2013 REVISION)
Blood transfusions are strictly forbidden in the JW Organization. The scriptural admonishment to “abstain from blood” mainly referred to consumption, but JWs take it to the extreme. Every year, the elders dole out special anti-blood cards to the members of the congregation. These cards must be signed and witnessed by two people in order to be valid. In case of an emergency, the card clearly expresses refusal of blood transfusion (even if the situation is life threatening) and absolves doctors from any liability. Every single JW is expected to carry this card on his or her person at all times.
The first time I was given an anti-blood card, it felt heavy in my hand. I signed it but did so against my will (although I confessed this to no one). I felt guilty and believed that Jehovah was angry with me for not wanting to die for him. My father and an elder signed as my witnesses, and I was told to put it in my wallet where it could be visible in the event that I suffered an accident and someone went through my belongings. In case you’re curious, I have provided the following images:
